Action Comics Number One

action

The first appearance of Superman, the alter ego of newspaper reporter Clark Kent, was in a comic anthology published by national Allied Publications, a corporate predecessor of DC Comics in April of 1938. The creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were paid ten dollars per page for the 13-page story. It was the culmination of a five-year creative odyssey that had seen Superman morph from a bald villain with telepathic powers into an alien exiled to Earth from a more advanced society. It's estimated that there are no more than 100 copies of Action Comics Number One still in existence from an original press run of 200,00 copies. A Google search for the story of the comic book reveals numerous record breaking sales of culminating in April of 2024 with a $6 Million purchase of a copy graded at 8.5. Two higher graded copies exist.
