Carolina Bays

CarolinaBayFeatures

Carolina Bays are elliptical, shallow depressions in the earth's surface found along the eastern seaboard of the United States. They are always aligned in a northeast to southwest direction. There are approximately 500,000 of them. Most have long been drained for agricultural use, although a few, like White Lake and Jones Lake in Bladen County, North Carolina are still filled, reaching a maximum depth of about 15 feet. The current theory of their origin posits that they were formed by glaciers during the ice age and replaces an earlier theory that they were formed by the extraterrestrial impact of meteors forming craters. From the air in some regions of the Carolinas where the bays are most dense, dozens can be seen at one time from an aerial view.
