Concert Movies

In a time when the cost of concert tickets, parking and concessions can cost a week's pay or more, I'm glad there are concert movies we can still enjoy for next to nothing. Although I'd probably figure out a way for my granddaughter to see Taylor Swift in person if she ever got the chance, I already have videos of her dancing at the recently released Eras Tour concert movie. As one of the oldest members of Gen X, my own concert movie favorites lean towards classic rock for which I am unapologetic. Here are my favorites.

The Last Waltz - Wikipedia This 1976 film was the last concert by the original members of The Band, although they would go on performing without Robbie Robertson for some time. It features a myriad of rockers performing with the group including Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Joanie Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, The Staple Singers, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond and Ronnie Hawkins.

Stop Making Sense - Wikipedia This independently produced 1984 film is often cited as the best concert film of all time. It captures The Talking Heads at the height of their creative powers.

Woodstock (film) - Wikipedia it's only fitting that the most famous concert of all time is preserved as a movie. this 1970 film won the academy award for best documentary. In subsequent years a lengthened director's cut and a blueray version have been released. The film opens like the concert did with a performance by Ritchie Havens and closes with Jimi Hendrix. Other notable performers include Janis Joplin, Country Joe and The Fish, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joan Baez, Joe Cocker and Santana plus many more.
