The Golden Age of Piracy

Characters from a tv show about pirates

My mother lives in coastal Carteret County, North Carolina, home of the pre-colonial town of Beaufort, where in the late 1990s, the sunken wreckage of The Queen Anne's Revenge was discovered. The QAR was the flagship of the English pirate Edward Teach, better known to history as Blackbeard. He ran the ship aground while trying to enter the harbor about six months before he was killed in battle off the coast of Ocracoke. The entire saga of the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean (1650-1720) has been entertaining the world for centuries. From the novel Treasure Island, the Disney movies, and more recently, the immensely entertaining and well-done television show Black Sails, the stories of Calico Jack Rackham, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonny, and others provide a look back in time to when larceny on the high seas was an ever-present danger.
