Mastodon Resources for Everyone
I love the federated social media network known as Mastodon. Elon Musk's purposeful transformation of Twitter into a right-wing cesspool rule using that out. Threads, the Meta answer to microblogging, is 100% manipulated by an algorithm that promotes "engagement" over substantive interaction, plus it has a horrible track record of silencing LGBT voices. Bluesky is just meh and doesn't seem to have the proclivity towards community and relationship building. Mastodon, however, in my experience is a great international community of generally well-behaved people. It's not algorithm driven and the interactions there are generally pleasant and helpful.
- My favorite iOS client is Ivory by Tapbots..
- My preferred method of accessing on computer is through the native web interface, but Phanpy and Elk are also good choices.
- To schedule posts for later and for reports of follows, unfollows and community interaction, I use Fedica for free
- I have an account on three servers: OMG.LOL where using the Mastodon server is part of a whole suite of IndyWeb tools, 500.social, an experimental community where members pay $2 a month and the membership is limited to 500 members (there are still spaces left), and Onephoto.club a niche community for travel photography
- There is a good guide for using Mastodon search on Mark W.rites blog
- Some interesting sites on Fediverse metrics include FediDB, MastoMetrics, and Anolytodon
- To find people to follow, this site identifies accounts that people you are already following are fans of and suggests them for you - Followgraph
