My Favorite Communities on Reddit
I joined Reddit in 2006, the year after it was founded by a pair of students from the University of Virginia. I've seen a ton of changes for better and worse over the past 18 years but it's still one of the sites I visit daily. Over the years I've joined hundreds of subreddits. Here are my favorites.
r/MacApps
It should come as no surprise that the author of a site devoted solely to Apple software (Mac and iOS) is a fan of this community. I'm really flattered that the moderators here added AppAddict to the sidebar as a resource. It drives a lot of traffic my way.
r/MacOS
This is where I learn what the other side of the coin looks like. This massive sub has 376K members and I answered the call to become a moderator several months ago. It's a pretty easy job for the most part. It has rules against self promotion that require some tough choices at times. I love that it lets me stamp out that particular brand of Reddit meanness with the ban hammer though. All in all, it is a great resource for any Mac techie.
r/ObsidianMD
People who use the popular plain text note taking application Obsidian tend to be pretty passionate about it, including yours truly. Obsidian is my my favorite app. I've enjoyed it more than any piece of software since Netscape 2.0. This subreddit is an excellent place to learn about the extensive plugin infrastructure the app offers. You can also get plenty of ideas on how to structure your setup, what kinds of notes to take and a lot more.
r/Political Humor
As a confirmed lefty and Internet meme consumer, I appreciate the steady stream of content this subreddit provides. The only downer is that it is US centric so I don't get a chance to improve my internationalist bona fides by learning more about politics across the globe.
r/Life Pro Tips
This subreddit offers a steady stream of useful information. The to current topics include:
- Teach your parents/grandparents to make AI art (so they will know what fakes look like)
- People telling you how to make money online are always malicious
- Wondering how much you should spend on food at home? The U.S.D.A. publishes monthly food plans for 4 different levels of spending
- Don’t say ‘good to meet you’, say ‘good to see you’. This saves embarrassment if you’ve met before but are bad at remembering people/faces.
- Before you buy anything, look at the issues forums and search for frequent problems related to the product.
