The Blue Ridge Parkway

Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway

The United States has many beautiful drives, there is no doubt, but the one with which I am most intimately familiar is the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway that runs from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The parkway was conceived and built during the Democratic administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt beginning in 1936 using a mix of private contractors and the Civilian Conservation Corps. During World War maintenance work was done by conscientious objectors to military service.

The parkway is popular with bicyclists and motor cyclists. It is a two-lane road off limits to all commercial traffic. It is well known for numerous pull-off overlooks of the surrounding countryside. The Appalachian Trail crosses the roadway numerous times. There are many, many things to do within a few miles of the parkway and lots of wonderful mountain towns to explore.
