The Mac Operating System in the Modern Era
Those of us in the Mac enthusiasts space are looking forward to the release of the latest version of the operating system on Monday, September 16, 2024.
Read my take on operating system upgrades.
The first version Mac OS X 10.0, Cheetah, was released on March 24, 2001, and in the intervening years, a total of 21 versions have been released. The first versions were costly for Mac owners who wanted to upgrade, costing $
129 apiece. The last paid version was Mountain Lion in 2012, and it went for $19. Mountain Lion was also the last version to follow the big cat naming scheme. Since then, versions have been named for California landmarks. In 2020, Apple abandoned the OS X naming scheme and started incrementing the operating system sequentially. The version being released this week is macOS 15 Sequoia.
