The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, 1963

When my wife and I got married, we elected to have our small, quick and private ceremony on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, the site of the 1963 march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and the place where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made perhaps the most famous single speech in American history. I very much wanted something to connect the most important relationship in my life with what is good about this country. My wife and spent the next 156 days on an epic honeymoon, hiking across 14 states and meeting people from all over.

Today, as the first black woman to lead a major party, Kamala Harris, is set to go head-to-head against a racist monster for the presidency of the United States and the future of freedom as we know it, I think it is fitting to look back at the events of August 28, 1963, and a time when both conservatives and liberals supported civil rights and only racists didn't.
