These Subscriptions Are Worth It
I long for the days when I didn't have so many reoccurring bills, doesn't everyone? I have great memories of TV when I was a kid and everything, we watched was free. We had an antenna and lived close enough to TV stations from the three big networks to get all the shows we wanted to watch. We got all of our news from the one newspaper we subscribed to, the Raleigh News and Observer. We got weather reports from the radio at 10 minutes past the hour and most of our bills were utility payments, rent and a car note. These days, almost everything comes with a reoccurring cost, and it is getting worse. There are now features on new cars (seat warmers) that will only work if you pay the manufacturer an extra few bucks a month perpetually.
In my life, these are things I subscribe to that I find value in, even if I wish I didn't have that deduction every month.
- Day One Journal - I have 18,000 entries in this journaling software that I've been using for a decade.
- Google Drive - I have a lifetime of photographs, my collection of over 2,000 albums and every important document I have ever created safely stored in the cloud and if my house burns down, all my memories will be safe
- Netflix - I won't tell you how many pay channels I have because it's embarrassing, but truth be told, if all I had was Netflix, I could still find something to watch every night
- Setapp- I'm a computer guy to my soul and this all you can eat software service gives me access to hundreds of apps to use and experiment with.
- Washington Post - There are a lot of problems with corporate media and with the billionaires who own own the companies, but there are still lots of good journalists out there working hard to keep us informed. I canceled my New York Times subscription after 20 years because I disagree with the direction the paper has taken, but the post is still a daily read for me.
