The Virginia Creeper Trail
Running from Abingdon, Virginia through the small town of Damascus until just pass White Top Station, the 34.3-mile Virgina Creeper National Scenic Trail is within a day's drive for tens of millions of Americans along the East Coast, including the greater NYC area, Washington DC, Charlotte and Atlanta. Considered by many to the best rail trail for cycling in the United States, thousands of people from all age groups make the 17-mile downhill run from White Top down to Damascus on weekends with rented bikes from the numerous cycling and shuttle services in the area. There is even a cafe located along the way where you stop for a drink and a piece of homemade cake!
Much of the trail is surrounded by the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and for a short stretch the world-famous Appalachian Trail and the Virgina Creeper Trail overlap. You can often see through hikers on their way to Maine from their starting point at Springer Mountain, Georgia. There are multiple popular ultramarathon races run on the trail including the Dam Yeti 50 Mile Endurance Run and the Yeti 100.
