Vivian Maier was an American born daughter of French and Austrian parents who grew up in France and New York City. During her life, she supported herself as a children's nanny but in her spare time took over 150,000 photographs, many of which were not developed until after her death and in any case, she never shared her work with anyone. She failed to pay the rent on the storage locker where her photos, undeveloped film and negatives were stored and around the time of her death in 2009, they were auctioned off. Parts of the lockers contents were sold to three different people, and one of them eventually put some of the photos on Flickr, where they almost instantly went viral.

Since that time, numerous books and films have been produced highlighting her life and work, including Finding Vivian Maier in 2013, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Her work can be seen online in books.
