Who Was Archie Bunker
We may be in a golden age of streaming television where actors no longer specialize in motion pictures and we have see people like Harrison Ford, Reese Witherspoon, Alec Baldwin appear in weekly and serialized shows, something that didn't used to happen. We even have classic shows and may will argue that the best TV ever made has been created in the21st century. When it comes to situation comedy, however, I don't believe anything can hold a socially relevant candle to the 1970s, particularly to Norman Lear's groundbreaking show, All in the Family.
In this day and age as people try to figure out how a loud mouthed, bigoted and unintelligent protestant guy from Queens can be so popular as to be elected president of the United States (by minority vote), we can look back at a similar character, Archie Bunker, played by Carol O'Connor on the show. Archie's foremost characteristic was his bigotry. He railed against blacks, Hispanics, "Commies", Freemasons, gays, women, hippies, Jews, Asians, Catholics, "women's libbers", and Polish–Americans. His second biggest characteristic was impotent cluelessness, a trait that encompasses Donald Trump and his followers.
In the end, Archie Bunker occasionally showed some redeeming qualities and the ability to change, even if only a little, something that has so far eluded Trump.
